Chapter 7

Facilitative Leadership

The concepts of leadership, power, and politics have been written about for centuries, from Machiavelli’s The Prince and Sun Tzu’s The Art of War to today’s world. Leadership is not all about personality and personal persuasion. Knowing and understanding how to handle politics and power has a direct correlation to success for librarians on both local and national bases. Understanding the underlying social systems within which libraries exist and library personnel work goes a long way to understanding the social world for what it is—a complex world developed over time and reacting to constant change. Using social science skills and data, it is possible to design systems that work and make a difference (Pfeffer, 2015). This chapter first identifies leadership models, tasks, and challenges, then describes facilitative techniques that promote transparency, buy-in, and successful outcomes.
